The Heart of a Child

My title sounds deep, but it is really just a glimpse at the thoughts of my 6 year old! Today, as we left the pediatrician's office for Lizzy's 6th birthday checkup, I saw Lizzy's lip dragging on the ground and the tears starting. I had a feeling what was coming, but I acted innocent: "Lizzy, what's wrong?" "I passed my vision test, Mommy, I can't get glasses!"
Needless to say, I encouraged the heart of my child to THANK God for her perfect vision, not pout about the fact that she DOESN'T get to wear glasses!

Boys and Girls Playing

Lizzy: Jake, do you want to play Barbies?

Jake: (very loudly) YES! Let me go get my Bionicle!

Sarah and Dan: "The Barbie has to stay in her budget."

Lizzy: "What is a budget?"

Sarah: "That is how much money you can spend."

Lessons from a Tea Party

Today was forcast to have a thunderstorm around noon. Grey days always make me think of hot drinks and our boxes of Girl Scout cookies, so tea is high on the list! After the three younger kids played outside, the rain started to pelt down from above. The three oldest kids immediately began their favorite tea party preparations.
So what lessons can be learned from a tea party? It is, after all, a Monday in the middle of the school year! We all learned something, and here is how it played out:
Leah: This was Leah's second cup of real tea. She has a new mug from Christmas that says Princess and she LOVES to use it. I think she likely learned that 3 ice cubes added to hot tea makes iced tea.
Jacob: Jake LOVES tea. Who said kids should have lemonade or apple juice instead of tea? Granted, he is really into Constant Comment right now, which IS caffeinated, but he'll get over it :-) Jakey got to watch his brother and sisters serve one another at the party and is learning how to serve. Jakey also was working on his matching
amounts: I get one cookie for every 1 sandwich I eat. Therefore, if I eat 4 sandwiches I get 4 cookies!!!!
Lizzy: Lizzy served the family by making name cards for each of us. In 6 year old fashion, she haphazardly cut pieces of paper and wrote each of our names in crayon. She placed the name tags on our saucers. It was very sweet to see my carefully written M-O-M on my saucer! Lizzy has also been learning how to better use manner words and saw an example in the Berenstein Bears book about manners. In the book they say, "It would be my pleasure" and "dear brother," etc. I heard
her use similar phrases when asked to pass items at the table! She is learning!!
Daniel: Daniel is learning to help in an overall sense now that he is 8 1/2. Sarah is a wonderful example to all of them, and I can tend to just ask her to help me, but I have been learning to ask Daniel to help and now we are reaping the rewards of that. Daniel initiated setting the apples out on a plate and got out the tea bags. He helped clear the table when we were done and entered into "adult conversation" during the repast. He is constantly thinking, that one!
Sarah: Sarah pretty
much set up the show! She brewed the tea, set the table, laid out the cookies on a platter, laid the napkins and even put iTunes on for background music! She loves an excuse to have a good party! Sarah continually is learning to serve others with a cheerful heart. She is very motivated to do things she likes, in other situations she is learning to serve even when she doesn't want to. Sarah also learned about "adult conversation." What did we discuss at our tea party today? Politics and the weather! I love it!!!
Mom: What did mom learn at the tea party. I continue to learn that the JOY of homeschooling is "wasting" an extra hour to make a tea party. I cut out sandwiches in teapot shapes and cut up cheese and ham to go with crackers. I could have kept us on schedule, but why? What will my kids remember? That they had mom over them with a whip every day, or that we took the time to have a tea party when the weather was grey? I hope they remember these fun times. Also, I continue to learn about not overreacting. Yes,
we lost a piece of china today. I am glad it wasn't a favorite piece, it was just the lid to a creamer I bought used, but useful none-the-less. So, no, I didn't overreact, but I learned that the 6 year old is not wise enough yet to know how to carry a two-piece porcelain item without dropping part of it (which shatters on tile, by the way.)
Gabe: Gabe learned to be happy in his swing while the rest of us enjoyed our tea!
Last picture: The last picture shows the rain on one of our new hibiscus flowers. I just thought it was pretty!

Daddy & Daughter #3

Leah has no problem throwing a book at Daddy and hopping into his lap. This one is her current favorite. "Good Morning, Good Night." It is a touch and feel and at the end, she loves to point out how the girl is sleeping in a big girl bed (like she does now!)

Jacob Quote

"Jake, who are you dressed up as?"
"I'm a Bad White Guy."

Recent Pics. Gabe 3 1/2 Months

Monday, this last week, was our official "Pajama Day!" for homeschool! I ALWAYS
make them get dressed! Anyhow, it is rare that it is sub-freezing in South Florida, so it seemed
appropriate! The kids got very into tea this week-they tend to go through spurts, but they all love read tea.
Right now Sarah, Marc and I are on a Constant Comment flavor-kick! This first
picture is of Leah's first ever tea-party! She didn't get a teacup and
saucer, though! She got her new unbreakable Princess mug!

Here is a picture of my dad's new sleep-but-keep-holding-the-baby pose! Gabe was all wedged down it there! My mom and I had to rescue him because he ended up not liking his safe-zone!

In this third picture is Gabriel in the Johnny-jump-up for the first time! He has been a strong boy from the start and has "stood" on my lap since he was a newbie. After 3 times now he is finally starting to bounce himself a little bit! This baby apparatus has been with us for all 6 babies!!!! Only a handful of things have survived, but this is one of them!

This last picture shows my kids hard work together!! They have been very busy outside since the weather started warming up! Lizzy got the "tree trunk" tent for Chri
stmas and the camouflage "blanket" to build her world-fa
mous "hideouts" with. I love that they tried to block up every hole! The tree trunk is the kitchen and th
e Buzz Lightyear tent is the boys room-or so I was told!

Today's Top 10--How ordinary life is Extraordinary!

10. I put Daniel down for a rest while Marc went to do a computer job. Marc returned 15 minutes later and got him up to watch football together. ABSOLUTELY!!!

9. Me: "What museum is that?"
Lizzy: "The 'Mithsonian"

8. Snuggling with Lizzy, Leah and Gabriel to watch The Storykeepers cartoon-set in Roman times. My Sunday "home from church" rule is Christian movies only!

7. Leah: "Knock-ock"
Me: "Who's there?"
Leah: "Ba-cow"
Me: "Bob the interrupting cow, who?"
Leah: "ME-OOOOOO"
(The joy of this, is that she is copying our new favorite joke, but doesn't get the timing at all!"

6. The smell of baby sweat on Gabriel. How is it all my babies have the exact same smell?

5. Making jokes with Marc that only married people can make! No further comment!

4. Me: "Leah, what is in your mouth?"
Leah: (her pacifier is immediately hucked onto the ground :-)

3. When Papa was here in Dec/Jan he helped Daniel build the USS Nemitz, the German Bismark and the HMS Victory. Yesterday, Marc helped him build the USS Alabama submarine. These are out of paper, mind you, and good old fashioned glue! Daniel told me today, with such excitement in his eyes, that tomorrow(Daddy's day off work) that Daddy is going to help him build the Trireme- an oared ship from Roman days!!! I love how man-time lights up his eyes!

2. The way Gabriel soaks the front of his shirts now that he is vertical in his johnny-jump-up. He is mimicking the way Dan soaked his shirts with drool!

1. Helping my sweet Sarah scrapbook. She is working on a small album of pictures of her and Ashleigh Connor, her best friend of 5 years who recently moved to Virginia. Then we went to Michaels and she was SO EXCITED that they have a whole line of American Girl crafts now! She super-saves her money now that she is older, but she whipped it out to buy 150 sheet book of AG scrapbooking paper and a new 12 x 12 book. I had so much fun with her tonight looking through my old College scrapbook and helping her find pictures for her own book! I am thrilled to have something fun for the two of us to do together and I can say "Whatever you like honey, it is your book" instead of constantly telling her what to do, like I do for everything else!" Thanks to God!

Isn't God extraordinary! He has blessed me with all these lives to impact and be impacted by! And how fun and funny it is!!
